Opposition FDC Applauds Dokolo District for Electing UPC Candidate
The opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has extended recognition and appreciation to the people of Dokolo district for electing an opposition member, Hon. Sarah Ogutti of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), to represent them in parliament.
Speaking to journalists at the party’s headquarters in Najjanankumbi on Monday, the FDC’s deputy secretary for publicity, Mulindwa Walid Lubega, highlighted the significance of the Dokolo by-election results. Despite the victory of the UPC candidate, Hon. Ogutti, the combined votes of FDC and UPC supporters totaled over 30,000, solidifying the area as an opposition stronghold.
The FDC candidate polled 8,168 votes while the winner, Hon. Ogutti on the UPC ticket garnered 23,044 votes all totaling 31,212 votes from two opposition parties.
Lubega congratulated Hon. Ogutti on her win and commended the FDC candidate, Dr. Rosemary Alwoc Ogwal, for her campaign efforts. He attributed their electoral success to the unwavering support of opposition voters in Dokolo.
However, Lubega raised concerns about alleged electoral malpractice allegedly plotted by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party. He accused the NRM of employing nefarious tactics, including the interception of vehicles allegedly carrying pre-ticked ballot papers and instances of voter bribery and intimidation.
“We must address the nefarious tactics employed by the NRM to disrupt the elections,” Lubega asserted. He cited specific instances, such as the interception of a Toyota Harrier registered under NRM operatives, which was allegedly carrying pre-ticked ballot papers. Additionally, Lubega highlighted reports of high levels of voter bribery and intimidation by NRM agents during the by-election.
The FDC vowed to thoroughly analyze these incidents for future reference and called for accountability in ensuring free and fair electoral processes in Uganda.
