Kampala police have arrested one suspect connected to the incident at the residence of outspoken politician Hon. Mubarak Munyagwa in Kimbejja Cell, Budo Ward, Kyengera Town Council on January 3rd, 2024.

The incident happened at 3:00 am when a group of unidentified assailants armed with machetes and sharp objects attacked the residence. The security guard, Benjamin Mpaka, was injured with a deep cut to the head as the intruders attempted to enter the house.

Hon. Munyagwa promptly informed the Nsangi police of the attack, triggering a rapid response. Led by the Division Police Commander, police officers moved to the scene, deploying K9 units despite challenging heavy rain conditions.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, says the police successfully prevented the assailants from gaining entry into the legislator’s home, ensuring the safety of both life and property. Upon arrival, one suspect attempting to flee in a Datsun pick-up (registration number UAK 182A) was apprehended and is currently in custody, aiding ongoing investigations.

Mpaka, the injured security guard, was swiftly transported to Mulago for medical treatment and is currently receiving care.

Owoyesigyire dismissed social media reports of gunfire at Munyagwa’s residence. He clarified that the assailants were armed solely with sharp objects.

Commending Hon. Mubarak Munyagwa for his prompt reporting, Owoyesigyire said the legislator played a crucial role in facilitating the effective police response that prevented further harm. He assured the public that efforts are underway to track down the remaining culprits and bring them to justice.
