The Karuma-Gulu water project, valued at billions in shillings, is set to be inaugurated in October 2024, as outlined by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation’s timeline.
This facility, situated near the Karuma Hydropower plant, will pump 30 million liters of water daily. The ongoing second phase involves the water treatment plant’s construction. This plant will treat 10 million liters of water sourced from the intake.
Deputy Managing Director NWSC Johnson Amayo confirmed that the water intake structure on the River Nile’s bank is finished.
Amayo explained during a Gulu City stakeholder meeting that the project aims to increase water supply in the region. Gulu City, which currently serves around 11,000 customers, produces 10 million liters daily. He expressed optimism about the contractor’s ability to meet the project’s schedule and requested cooperation from local leaders.
Construction began last year and includes the creation of a water treatment facility, reservoirs, and installation of 72-kilometer pipelines for water transmission.
The project is funded by a grant from Kfw and a loan from the World Bank totaling 170 billion Shillings, the initiative is managed by French companies Sogea Satom and Denys NV. It falls under the Integrated Water Management and Development Project Program (IWMDP).
The Karuma-Gulu water project aims to increase Gulu City’s water production capacity from 12,000 to 22,000 liters per day. About 4.5 kilometers of the 69.5-kilometer transmission mains are already laid, and the construction of a 5,300 cubic meters capacity tank in Bardege-Layibi Division is ongoing.
