Police in Rukiga District are holding a male nurse at Mparo Health Center IV in Mparo Town Council, for raping a pregnant patient under his care

The suspect, Darius Orikiriza, attacked his victim, a 20-year-old woman hailing from Maaya village, Kitanga parish, Kashambya sub-county, had sought medical attention at the facility for a pregnancy checkup. Following an initial examination, she was referred for an ultrasound scan to determine the status of her pregnancy.

Orikiriza, entrusted with the well-being and care of patients, took advantage of the situation. He callously ordered the victim to undress completely, exploiting her vulnerability. In a horrifying display of power, he proceeded to commit a sexual assault against her will, leaving her in shock and desperate for help.

The victim’s cries for assistance reached the ears of the facility’s authorities, prompting swift intervention.

Elly Maate, the spokesperson for the Kigezi region police, confirmed that Orikiriza had been apprehended.

He says the situation necessitated a comprehensive investigation, which included the collection of genital swabs from both the victim and the accused.

Orikiriza was also subjected to an HIV test, the results of which the test returned positive, revealing that he carried the virus responsible for a global health crisis. This alarming revelation raised concerns not only about the victim’s immediate well-being but also about the potential implications for her long-term health.

The case has been formally registered at the Rukiga police station under the file number CRB 361/2023, symbolizing the pursuit of justice for the victim and accountability for the accused.
