NRM Youth Coordinator Urges Former LOP Mpuuga to Join Party

The National Youth Coordinator of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Joseph Ssewava Mukasa, has urged Mathias Mpuuga, the former Leader of the Opposition, to cautiously consider registering and joining the party.

Mukasa conveyed this message during the launch of the party’s nationwide membership renewal and registration exercise. Addressing a press conference, Mukasa encouraged Mpuuga and other opposition members to actively participate in the exercise, aimed at bolstering the ruling party’s membership ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The update of the party register, commonly referred to as the “yellow book,” marks the initial phase of the party’s internal and general election preparations. Mukasa underscored the importance of carefully evaluating Mpuuga’s intentions if he chooses to align with the party.

He extended an invitation to Mpuuga and other dissatisfied individuals from opposing camps, expressing the NRM’s willingness to welcome new members. Should Mpuuga express interest in joining, Mukasa revealed that the NRM would arrange a meeting and request him to take an oath.

However, Mukasa clarified that Mpuuga should not anticipate an immediate high-ranking position within the party. “It is crucial to understand that existing party members will be present upon your entry. Therefore, immediate placement in a prominent role should not be expected,” Mukasa emphasized.

Drawing attention to past instances where new members wrongly assumed automatic access to influential positions, Mukasa stressed the NRM’s determination to prevent such occurrences this time.

If Mpuuga decides to join, Mukasa assured that he would be treated like any other party member. The NRM has a structured process, including orientation on the party’s ideology. Mukasa reaffirmed the party’s commitment to upholding its principles and values.

Regarding monitoring Mpuuga’s motives for joining, Mukasa disclosed that the NRM would observe him for approximately five years. This monitoring period aims to address any negative character traits that may require improvement or correction. “We will assess your motives for joining the party over five years, which is necessary to rectify any undesirable character traits,” Mukasa stated, emphasizing the party’s dedication to maintaining high standards among its members.
