NRM Women’s League calls Active Participation Ahead of Registration Drive
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Women’s League Leadership is encouraging women and supporters of the ruling party to take part in the upcoming registration, display, and update process starting next week on Wednesday, March 13th, 2024.
This follows NRM National Chairman Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s launch of a countrywide registration exercise for all party members at the Secretariat, Kyadondo Road in Kampala.
During a press conference held at the NRM Secretariat ahead of the Women’s Day celebrations scheduled for Friday, March 8th, 2024, the 2nd National Vice Chairperson of NRM and First Deputy Prime Minister, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, called on all women to visit their village registrars and confirm membership in the yellow book.
“The update process will help include new recruits into the register and remove those who have died, relocated to other areas, or joined other parties,” Kadaga said.
Kadaga also explained that the new register will provide an opportunity for women and all party members to participate in the upcoming structure and internal elections.
Lydia Wanyoto Mutende, Chairperson of the NRM Women League, urged women to actively engage in government programs like the parish development model and Emyooga, among other initiatives aimed at enhancing household incomes.
“Women’s economic empowerment, according to research, reduces cases of domestic violence. This is why women should actively participate in income-generating activities,” Wanyoto said.
Wanyoto reiterated the importance for all women in the NRM to confirm their membership in the party book.
At the same event, the NRM Deputy Secretary-General, Rose Namayanja, congratulated all women on reaching their day, saying it is not just a symbolic day but rather a day to take stock of NRM achievements and challenges, and to reflect on the government’s deliberate efforts to empower women.
“I commend the campaigns of the women’s movement, which advocated for equal opportunities and paved the way for many young females to participate in leadership up to top positions,” Namayanja said, adding, “Women like Rt.Hon. Kadaga inspired many young women to contest for positions.”
The NRM National Treasurer, Ambassador Barbra Nekesa, thanked the government for not only promoting women into leadership positions but also for enacting gender-responsive policies that have empowered women and girls in offices, homes, and schools.
“The strides achieved so far are significant. Moving forward, we commit to improving the communities where women and their children live,” Nekesa said.
International Women’s Day celebrations will take place in Katakwi District on Friday, March 8th, under the theme; “Accelerating gender equality through women’s Economic Empowerment”, with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni expected to be the Guest of Honor.
