NRM SG Todwong Urges UNSA Leaders to Prepare for Future Political Roles

The NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong, has urged student leaders under the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) to maintain loyalty and composure during their service to foster their political careers.

He addressed the UNSA executive leaders during a courtesy call at the party headquarters on Kyadondo Road, Nakasero.

Todwong emphasized that youth is a transitional stage to old age. “You cannot be young forever, so you must prepare for the future by developing a good and reliable character that distinguishes you for future assignments,” he stated.

He pointed out that many national leaders started in student leadership, including the current president. “You should maximize your time as a student leader to learn and prepare for future leadership roles in the country,” Todwong advised.

He also encouraged young people to support and collaborate with the NRM, claiming it is the only party committed to addressing the core issues affecting local communities. “We are fighting corruption, disease, and advocating for better education, infrastructure, and socio-economic transformation for all Ugandans. We invite you to join these efforts to transform our rural communities,” Todwong said.

He clarified that the NRM did not promise to eliminate poverty, corruption, disease, illiteracy, or insecurity entirely but to minimize them and perform better than other systems of governance. “Indeed, we have managed to improve many parameters,” the NRM Secretariat head added.

The NRM Director of Youth and Institutions, Hon. Okwir Rabwoni, highlighted the opportunity for fresh blood to assume leadership within the NRM. “The NRM was founded by young people. The commander of the army, the political commissariat, both military and civilian, and the top leadership of the Central Executive Committee were initially all young people. Since its inception in 1981, the NRM has been driven by the efforts of young people,” Rabwoni said.

“Our aim is to establish a sustainable relationship between ourselves and you, given that we transitioned from student leadership to national leadership, and we expect you to do the same,” he added.

Okot Francis, the UNSA President, shared with the Secretary General the challenges they face in mobilizing youth support for the NRM during institutional elections. “We often seek support during guild elections because many young people lack information about the ruling party and its core principles,” he explained.

They committed to continuing their collaboration with the government to fulfill the manifesto for securing the future.
