New Japanese Amb Presents Credentials to Foreign Affairs Ministry
State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Henry Okello Oryem, has received copies of letters of credence from Takuya Sasayama, the new ambassador of Japan to Uganda.
Sasayama, who has served in the Japanese Foreign Service since 1988, arrives in Uganda as Ambassador-designate, succeeding Amb. Fukuzawa Hidemoto. He previously held the position of Consul-General of Japan in Toronto.
Throughout his career, Sasayama has undertaken duty tours in various cities, including Washington, DC, Seoul, Mexico City, Kuala Lumpur, Ottawa, and Egypt.
During the ceremony, the ambassador conveyed warm greetings from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, recalling the gracious reception he received during his visit to Uganda in 2023.
Minister Okello extended a warm welcome to Sasayama, praising the longstanding friendship between Uganda and Japan. He highlighted Japan’s generosity through technical assistance programs under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Tokyo International Conference for African Development (TICAD).
Okello emphasized Uganda’s appreciation for Japan’s approach to development assistance in Africa, particularly its commitment to mutual respect and equal partnership.
“Uganda highly values Japan’s willingness to engage with bilateral partners and its policy of non-interference in bilateral relations. Mutual respect is fundamental to any bilateral relationship,” he stated.
Ambassador Sasayama expressed his enthusiasm for working in Uganda and exploring the country, especially the Japanese government grant assistance projects for grassroots human security initiated across Uganda since 1992.
He assured Okello that these projects remain a priority for Japan and have yielded positive results, with plans to launch more initiatives in the future.
During his tenure at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Ambassador Sasayama has held positions such as Director of the APEC Division of the Economic Affairs Bureau and Director in the First South East Asian Affairs Department.
