NEC, UNOC Enter Partnership to Boost Industrial Growth

Uganda is on the right path towards fostering industrial growth and enhancing sector-specific collaborations. This has been achieved after the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) and the Uganda National Oil Company Ltd (UNOC) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The MoU was signed at the NEC headquarters in Bugolobi, Kampala, by Lt. Gen. James Mugira, the Managing Director of NEC, and Proscovia Nabbanja, the Chief Executive Officer of UNOC.

This strategic partnership is set to facilitate collaboration on several key projects within the Kabalega Industrial Park (KIP). The focus areas of this MoU include the production of fertilizers using various feedstocks, the development of facilities for Ammonia, Nitric Acid, and Ammonium Nitrate, and support for both the oil and gas and defense sectors.

One of the primary objectives of the collaboration is the advancement of fertilizer production within the country. By leveraging diverse feedstocks, NEC and UNOC aim to establish a robust fertilizer manufacturing infrastructure. This initiative is expected to not only reduce dependency on imported fertilizers but also to stimulate local agricultural productivity, thereby contributing to national food security.

The planned development of Ammonia, Nitric Acid, and Ammonium Nitrate facilities at the Kabalega Industrial Park is a key component of this endeavor. These chemicals are essential in the production of fertilizers, and their local manufacture will ensure a steady and cost-effective supply for the agriculture sector. This development aligns with Uganda’s broader industrialization goals, promoting self-sufficiency and economic resilience.

The collaboration extends to providing vital support to Uganda’s burgeoning oil and gas industry. With UNOC’s expertise in the sector, coupled with NEC’s industrial capabilities, the partnership is poised to address critical infrastructure and logistical needs within the industry. This includes the development of necessary facilities and the provision of technical and operational support to optimize oil and gas production processes.

The oil and gas sector is a pivotal part of Uganda’s economic strategy, with significant potential for job creation, revenue generation, and industrial diversification. The NEC-UNOC partnership is expected to play a crucial role in realizing this potential by ensuring that the necessary industrial and technological frameworks are in place.

Another significant area of collaboration is the support for Uganda’s defense sector. NEC’s role as the commercial arm of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) positions it strategically to bridge the gap between military needs and industrial capabilities. The partnership with UNOC will facilitate the development of specialized products and services tailored to the defense sector, enhancing national security and defense readiness.

The MoU signed between NEC and UNOC marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s industrial and economic development journey. By pooling resources, expertise, and strategic vision, the two entities aim to foster a culture of cooperation and innovation. This partnership is not only expected to drive growth in the specified sectors but also to create ripple effects across the broader economy, spurring job creation, technological advancement, and sustainable development.

Lt. Gen. James Mugira expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, “This MoU signifies a new chapter of collaboration that will bring substantial benefits to our industrial and economic landscape. By working together, we can achieve greater efficiencies, enhance our capabilities, and drive sustainable growth.”

Proscovia Nabbanja echoed these sentiments, highlighting the transformative potential of the partnership. “This collaboration with NEC is a testament to our commitment to fostering industrial growth and supporting key sectors of our economy. Together, we will unlock new opportunities and create lasting impact,” she remarked.

As NEC and UNOC embark on this collaborative journey, the successful implementation of the MoU’s objectives will be closely watched by industry stakeholders and the public alike. The partnership stands as a beacon of what can be achieved through strategic cooperation, setting a precedent for future collaborations in Uganda’s industrial sector.
