Navigating End of Year Parties Professionally.

It’s that time of the year where organisations, big or small celebrate achievements of the year. Today, allow me to share some tips on how you can navigate enjoyments professionally without being carried away.

I know that End of year parties are a good opportunity to celebrate success, unwind and connect with colleagues but they also reflect on your personal and professional image. Please carry yourselves with care during these parties. Your leaders, fellow staff, the waiters and waitresses, service providers and the invited guests are watching!

Here are some of the tips that have worked well for me; they could be of help;

  • Socialize smartly; use the opportunity to build genuine relationships.
  • Dress appropriately, aim for polished and appropriate outfit whether the dress code is casual or formal. Avoid extremes that will end up drawing the wrong attention.
  • Avoid gossip, stay positive. Keep away from cheap talk and sensitive topics. Focus on the achievements and enjoyments.
  • Know when to leave, don’t compete for the last man standing accolade, leave on a high before things get too rowdy. Don’t be the last to leave the party please.
  • Be mindful about posting events from the party, think before you post pictures and videos. Not everyone is keen to be included. Note that inappropriate posts can hurt your reputation and that of your organisation.
  • Limit what you say and with whom. Party environment is tempting. Your leaders(Bosses) will be be more sociable and approachable, avoid using this platform or opportunity to vent, otherwise you may end up saying more than necessary.
  • Do not dance on the table, if you want to showcase your dancing prowess, do so with care. Dance with class.
  • Last but not least, Moderate alcohol consumption. If drinks are served, know your limits. Free drinks should not excite you.

Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success” as a staff such parties are an opportunity of coming together with colleagues, unwind, strategize and bond as a team. It is an opportunity to blend fun with professionalism at the end of year parties. Remember there is life after the party.

Enjoy the moments but stay in control!
