Museveni Announces Intensified Campaign Against Rebels in Congo as Security Forces Pursue Fugitive Groups
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has declared that Uganda is escalating efforts to track down ADF rebels in Congo. Recently, the President disclosed that the UPDF executed seven attacks using various air platforms and one with medium-range artillery.
The impacts of these attacks were severe on the terrorists, prompting them to dispatch small infiltrator groups, like the one led by Njovu responsible for killing tourists. Njovu was apprehended with injuries, and three members of his group were killed, while seven others escaped, currently pursued by security forces in the Kibaale National Park area. Kamusu, a Congolese, leads this fugitive group, with Abu Waqas, an Arab from Tanzania, as their other leader in Congo, whose camp was targeted in one of the attacks, as stated by the President in a release on X.
Six air attacks occurred at kms 64 and 65 from the border, while the gunship strike was within 3 km of the border. The President emphasized that additional infiltrators, collaborating with individuals within the country, attempted to plant bombs in Kikuba-mutwe, Kabalagala, and Nabweru 2 cell. Thankfully, due to the vigilance of the Wanainchi (citizens) and security forces, the two bombs detonated harmlessly.
The President acknowledged the collaboration with his DR Congo counterpart, H.E Tshisekedi, in addressing the issue of “Lumbugu” (couch grass) and urged vigilance among citizens in various settings, such as churches, markets, mosques, and bars. He advocated for enhanced security measures in hotels and markets, emphasizing the importance of maintaining vigilance until the eradication of the “Lumbugu” threat in Congo.
