MTN Replaces Van Helleputte with Sylvia Mulinge as CEO Uganda

Effective October 01, 2022, Slyvia Mulinge Wairimu will serve as the new Chief Executive Officer, CEO for MTN Uganda.

Wairimu, currently the head of consumer business at Safaricom Kenya replaces Wim Vanhelleputte who leaves MTN after who has been CEO for over six years.

The appointment was confirmed by MTN group, the parent company of MTN Uganda in a statement released after board resolution to make changes in the management.

“Slyvia Mulinge joins MTN Uganda from safaricom,where she served as chief consumer business officer for the group. As a seasoned executive,she brings with her a passion of transforming customers lives using technology” South Africa MTN group said.

Mulinge is a graduate at the University of Nairobi holding a Bachelor of science degree (first class honours)

During his time as CEO, Vanhelleputte has spearheaded the separation of mobile financial services business from telecom business the initial public offer and listing of the company on the Uganda securities exchange.

His term has also seen a significant rise in customer base from 10.7% to 15.7 million with active data subscribers jumping 16% to 5.3 million while the company’s net income for the year ended December increased 5.8% to shs.10.8 billion, helped by a 9.7% jump in total revenue to 65.3 million.

Vanhelleputte has been promoted to a regional role as operating executive for the WECA markets in Liberia, Guinea-Conakry,Guinea-Bissau and Congo-Brazzaville within MTN group effective 1 August 2022.

In 2019,Vanhelleputte was among the MTN bosses deported on orders of the President of Uganda on political matters.

Security intelligence briefed the President that MTN Uganda bosses were assisting  National Unity Platform party President Robert Kyagulanyi to transact money from abroad to facilitate political activities against his government.
They were later cleared of the allegations and allowed back in the country.
