Former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, has announced that his newly established Democratic Front (DF) will be officially launched on June 27, 2025, at Laston Gardens, Masaka.
A day earlier ,June 26 , the party will convene a delegates’ conference to finalize its founding structures.
The Electoral Commission recently approved DF’s registration, transitioning it from the previously dormant Green Partisan Party Mpuuga, also current MP for Nyendo‑Mukungwe, describes DF as “a home for logical thinkers, progressive minds, and those who believe in political ethics and disciplined service delivery.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, Mpuuga also unveiled the party’s membership cards, signalling a formal onboarding process for adherents.
Prospective candidates can now pick up expressions of interest and nomination forms at DF’s offices on Namirembe Bishop Road, Kampala, where Acting Electoral Commission Chair Ismail Ssemyalo Mulabuzi has officially opened an office to receive applications for the 2026 general elections .
DF’s logo features a large tree with a broad canopy. The official colours are green, burnt orange, and light blue. A growing number of current and former MPs have associated with DF, including Abed Bwanika, Michael Kakembo, and Juliet Nakabuye, all previously aligned with NUP or other parties .
Mpuuga has recently clarified that DF aligns closely with the Democratic Alliance (DA), the pressure group Mpuuga had previously spearheaded. He insisted that DF is not a split from DA but rather its political extension, intended to funnel united opposition efforts into the 2026 elections
He reaffirmed DA’s role in coalition-building, bringing together Social Democratic Party (SDP), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and DF under a unified front for the coming polls
This launch marks a significant stage in DF’s strategy to position itself as a credible alternative ahead of 2026. With both the launch and candidate recruitment now in motion, observers will be watching closely to see how the party consolidates its internal structures and fields its first batch of nominees.
