Fire on the Mountain: Mpuuga Announces Plans to Champion Reforms in NUP
He vowed to unveil his plans to the public soon and expressed readiness to collaborate with the NUP members who share in the same sentiments
Commissioner of Parliament Mathias Mpuuga on Tuesday held a press conference in response to recent developments within the National Unity Platform (NUP).
The briefing was prompted by NUP’s decision to withdraw Mpuuga’s position to the Parliamentary Commission and replace him with Francis Zaake from Mityana Municipality.
In his statement, Mpuuga firmly stated his refusal to respond directly to NUP’s notification to Speaker Anita Among, but instead addressed his commitment to both the party and the nation.
“I will not respond to that letter, save to restate my position as communicated earlier to the Party and nation that I affirm the fact that I confess no wrongdoing whether in law or elementary common sense,” Mpuuga declared, asserting his innocence and integrity in the face of allegations. He reiterated his dedication to upholding the law and principles of justice, dismissing any attempts to tarnish his reputation for political gain.
As the Deputy President in charge of Buganda within NUP, Mpuuga said as one of the founders in the party’s establishment, he harbors no plans of leaving under any circumstances or undermining its objectives.
“I did not just join from no where but I was part of the founding block- where I serve as the deputy president in charge of Buganda. I am also here to reaffirm that I am not leaving NUP, I am not here to do anything to destroy or kill it. So, whoever thought they are hounding me out… I am here for keeps.” he stated
Mpuuga also expressed his willingness to address any personal issues with the party leadership directly, further stating that there exists no tensions between him and the party leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.
Mpuuga clarified that no formal meeting has occurred between him and party leader Bobi Wine. Instead, Mpuuga stated that he has only heard Bobi Wine speak about their purported meetings informally, at funerals or through media channels.
“If my president has personal issues with me, go and ask him. I have only been hearing him speak [about our meeting] at funerals, the media, among others, trying to convince the country to believe that I’m a terrible human being but the country has refused to believe that. I would want to meet him,” he stated
He assured fellow activists of his steadfast dedication to a fair Uganda dispelling any doubts regarding his integrity
“I am not and shall never be part of any form of corruption,” Mpuuga declared
He vowed to unveil his plans to the public soon and expressed readiness to collaborate with the NUP members who share in the same sentiments to cause reform of the party that he claims has been marred by nepotism, abuse of office, blackmail and extortion among others
“In the next days or weeks I will embark with colleagues that conquer with challenges in the party on a program to reform the party and make it credible and competent as a party or as government in waiting.” he said
Adding that : “I will share with the NUP leadership what I believe my party and I can contribute to the change agenda given the timeframe at our disposal and the urgent need to coalescence for the realization of change in our country. We should be embarking on a joint push for major reforms in our electoral laws and constitutional shifts to enable diaspora citizen participation in our electoral activities beyond manipulating the change agenda by selfish individuals. I’m aware of our supporters in the diaspora who are very desperate.” he stated
He reiterated his steadfast commitment to NUP and the principles of justice and democracy, signaling his readiness to confront any challenges within the party while remaining focused on the collective goal of a better Uganda.
Mpuuga also stressed the urgency of electoral and constitutional reforms to facilitate diaspora citizen participation, calling for unity to counter self-serving interests. He thanked supporters for their unwavering dedication to NUP’s mission and urged Ugandans to question the decisions of their leaders.
