Makindye West Member of Parliament Aloysius Allan Ssewanyana has been charged afresh with terrorism, following an amended indictment issued by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Justice Jane Frances Abodo.
Ssewanyana appeared on Monday before Justice Alice Komuhangi Khauka at the International Crimes Division of the High Court, alongside four co-accused: Mike Sserwadda, Jackson Kanyike, Bull Wamala, and John Mugerwa.
According to the amendment, the late Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya has been formally removed from the list of accused.
While Ssewanyana is currently out on bail, his co-accused remain on remand at Luzira prison. The revised charges stem from their alleged involvement in the bijambiya machete killings that swept across Masaka, Rakai, and Kampala between January and August 2021, leaving over 30 people dead and many others wounded.
The court was informed that Ssewanyana is accused of participating in the murder of Mugerwa Kizza, Kakooza Sulaiman, and Kiyimba Tadeo, and the attempted murder of Sebyoto Ronald in Ssettaala village. He also faces a new count of aiding and abetting terrorism through alleged financial facilitation of violent acts.
Justice Komuhangi has directed both the defence, represented by Henry Kunya, Crysostom Katumba, and Nicholas Ssenkumi, and the prosecution, led by Chief State Attorney Richard Birivumbuka, to file written submissions within two months.
The court will deliver its ruling on whether to confirm the charges and proceed to trial on August 26, 2025.
The judge has withheld plea-taking for the accused, stating that pleas will be entered only after reviewing the evidence disclosed by the prosecution which includes crime scene photographs, postmortem reports, and witness statements.
