Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake Arrested for Skipping Police Bond
Mityana Municipality Member of Parliament Francis Zaake Butebi has been arrested.
Zaake was intercepted last night around Clock Tower while on his way home and taken to Kampala Central Police Station (CPS) where he is currently detained.
The arrest follows failure by the MP to report for a bond extension on December 5, 2018, on grounds that he was admitted at Lubaga Hospital and was scheduled to travel to India for further treatment.
At the time Zaake stopped responding for bond, the director of Public Prosecution Mike Chibita had sanctioned charges of treason and escaping from lawful custody against him.
Police had issued two more summonses asking him to appear at Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) headquarters Kibuli, but he never showed up. A source in the police told this reporter that CID had summoned him several times to appear and be taken to court but he had refused to respond to any of the summonses.
Zaake has been a suspect of treason and escaping from lawful custody since August 13, 2018, when he was arrested in Arua during the final campaigns for Arua Municipality Parliamentary by elections. Zaake is said to have collapsed and was taken for Arua Referral Hospital but escaped from the sick bed undetected. He was next seen on August 15, 2018, admitted at Lubaga Hospital.
Zaake was arrested on Thursday, August 30th 3018 from Entebbe Airport as he was trying to travel to India for further medication. He was later driven to Mulago Hospital where he has kept until he was finally cleared to travel to India for medical attention.
