Mitooma Chief Magistrate and State Attorney Remanded on Corruption Charges

The Chief Magistrate of Mitooma, Her Worship Sylvia Nvanungi, and Sembabule State Attorney Jacqueline Bako have been remanded to Luzira Prisons by the Anti-Corruption Division of the High Court.

The charges stem from alleged corruption activities, a violation of section 2(a) and 26 of the Anti-Corruption Act.

The duo was taken into custody by detectives affiliated with the State House Anti-Corruption Unit after responding to summons issued against them.

The arrest follows accusations that, in April 2023, while in Masaka City and Sembabule District, they solicited UGX 2.5 million in gratification from the relatives of an individual on remand. The purported exchange was allegedly aimed at securing the release of the accused person on bail.

The charges highlight a serious breach of ethical conduct within the judicial system, as those entrusted with upholding the law now face allegations of corruption. The arrest is a stark reminder that corruption will not be tolerated within the judiciary, which claims a zero-tolerance policy towards such acts.

The Anti-Corruption Division remanded Her Worship Nvanungi and State Attorney Bako to Luzira Prisons until November 23rd, 2023, when their bail applications will be heard.

In response to the developments, Ereemye James the Public Relations Officer for the Judiciary, reiterated the institution’s stance against corruption. He emphasized that while the Judiciary condemns such acts, it will allow the legal process to unfold and ensure that the principles of justice are upheld.
