Mitooma Chief Magistrate and Ssembabule State Attorney Granted Bail
Mitooma Chief Magistrate Sylvia Nvanungi and Ssembabule State Attorney Jacqueline Bako, facing corruption charges, have been granted bail by the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala.
The duo spent a night in Luzira prison on eight counts of corruption. Allegations include soliciting bribes for releasing individuals on bail. Bako is accused of seeking gratification from relatives of detainees and accepting money to exclude someone from charges.
Both presented sureties and were granted bail amounts—Bako at 1.5 million shillings, Nvanungi at 800,000 shillings.
Sylvia Nvanungi, presented her brother Robert Muwangula and cousin Prosper Martin Turyagenda as sureties. She cited health issues, having undergone treatment since October 27th, 2023, and the loss of valuables, including her work ID, during her arrest. Nvanungi, with eight years of experience as a Judicial officer, asserted her ordinary residence within the court’s jurisdiction.
Bako presented her brother Francis Ayuko, her sister Dorcus Ndukuka, and close family friend Raymond Odonga as sureties. Stressing her 12-year experience as a State Attorney, she expressed her understanding of the obligations tied to being granted bail.
The court warned of potential imprisonment for the accused if they fail to appear, emphasizing the role and responsibility of sureties. The trial is adjourned to January 19th, 2024.
