Ministry of Gender to Host Women’s Empowerment and Rights Conference at NAM Summit
Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, in collaboration with civil society organizations, is convening a meeting today to discuss the advancement of women entrepreneurs and the economic empowerment of women.
This session is an auxiliary event known as “Strengthening Women’s Rights and Empowerment in Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Countries,” and it is taking place at Skies Hotel in Naguru.
The primary focus of the meeting is to reinforce women’s rights across NAM countries. Minister Betty Amongi highlighted the significance of the upcoming summit in addressing crucial issues affecting NAM member states, particularly women and youth.
Following a recent gathering of women ministers from NAM member states in Baku, Azerbaijan, the establishment of the NAM Women platform garnered positive reception. This platform is designed to facilitate discussions on issues concerning women and youth, ensuring their inclusion in NAM’s outcome documents.
President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, the current chair of NAM, has reaffirmed commitment to advancing the agenda of women and youth during the Kampala Summit, as mentioned by Minister Amongi.
The Baku meeting resulted in the Baku Declaration on Advancing the Rights and Empowerment of Women. The declaration urges NAM member states to establish the NAM Women platform during the Kampala summit and engage in discussions on its operational aspects.
It underscores the importance of enhancing cooperation among member states to address challenges faced by women in terms of their advancement and empowerment. Minister Amongi emphasized that the Baku Declaration reaffirms the vital role of women and the necessity of their full, equal, and meaningful participation in all aspects of sustainable development.
She mentioned that she has been tasked with presenting the Baku Declaration to the Kampala Summit on behalf of the Ministers in Charge of Women Affairs from NAM member states. Minister Amongi has already engaged with Ambassador Ayebare, Uganda’s representative to the Permanent Mission to the UN and Chairman of the Coordinating Bureau, who assured her that the matter will be further discussed during the Summit, with updates to be provided.
While the consultation process continues, Minister Amongi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to organize a side event as a follow-up to the Baku declarations of NAM. This event aims to mobilize women in Uganda and contribute to the empowerment agenda of NAM member states.
