Minister Nabakooba Launches Mass Land Registration
Minister of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Judith Nabakooba, has inaugurated the Church of Uganda’s mass land registration initiative, aimed at safeguarding Church property.
The launch took place during a training session for Diocesan Secretaries and Diocesan Estates Officers at the Provincial Secretariat in Namirembe, Kampala. This training, organized by Church Commissioners Holding Company Ltd, focuses on land registration and effective land use.
At the event, Minister Nabakooba emphasized the importance of expeditious land registration to ensure the Church has accurate land titles. She also stressed the need for productive use of the land.
“We have received numerous reports about land grabbers and encroachers on Church land. In many cases, there is no proof that the land belongs to the Church. The only evidence we need is the land title, and that’s why we are here to assist you in the registration process,” Nabakooba stated.
Acting Provincial Secretary Balaam Muheebwa expressed gratitude to the Ugandan government for its support of the Church of Uganda, particularly in the land registration process.
“On behalf of the Church of Uganda, I thank the government, especially the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, for providing us with technical expertise and all relevant documentation for land registration. We are committed to completing this exercise promptly,” Muheebwa said.
Acting Provincial Secretary Balaam Muheebwa helped Minister Judith Nabakooba display the document containing the Church of Uganda’s land records. The group Chief Executive Officer of Church Commissioners Holding Company Ltd, Rev. Jasper Mpirirwe Tumuhimbise, praised the government for its assistance in clearing the Church House debt and noted that compensation for government use of Church land in various areas significantly contributed to repaying this debt.
Church of Uganda Communications Officer Sadiiki Adam Mugume explained that the mass land registration launch follows a meeting earlier this year between Minister Nabakooba and the House of Bishops at the Lweza Training and Conference Centre. The resolutions from this meeting were presented to the Provincial Assembly Standing Committee (PASC), which then formed an ad hoc committee chaired by Bishop James William Ssebaggala to coordinate the partnership between the Church of Uganda and the government for the land registration process.
