Minister Lugoloobi to Face Trial in Iron Sheets Diversion Case

The High Court has further adjourned a case involving State Minister for Finance and Economic Planning Amos Lugoloobi related to the alleged diversion of iron sheets intended for the vulnerable people of Karamoja.

The case was adjourned to October 25 for a hearing, with the prosecution having lined up seven witnesses ready to testify against him. One of the pieces of evidence the prosecution intends to use is Lugoloobi’s appointment letter, which is expected to demonstrate that he misused his ministerial office.

The prosecution alleges that Lugoloobi was involved in obtaining 700 of these iron sheets in two phases, one involving 400 sheets between July 14, 2022, and February 2023, and another batch of 300 sheets between February 1, 2023, and March 16, 2023. He has been charged with dealing with suspect property and faces the possibility of a seven-year jail term, a fine not exceeding 3.2 million Ugandan shillings, or both if convicted.

The Minister is accused of dealing in pre-painted iron sheets marked ‘Office of the Prime Minister’ that were supposed to be distributed to those in need in the Karamoja region.

It’s worth noting that two other ministers, State Minister for Karamoja Affairs Agness Nandutu and Senior Minister Mary Gorreti Kitutu, jointly charged with her brother Michael Naboya Kitutu, are also facing trial related to the same Karamoja iron sheets scandal.
