Minister Kyofatogabye Blasts Lord Mayor Lukwago Over Road works in Central Division
The Minister of State for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Hon. Kyofatogabye Kabuye, has expressed appreciation for the Special Forces Regiment’s significant efforts in the ongoing road rehabilitation in Central Division.
Speaking at a press conference on Cabinet Decisions at the Uganda Media Center, Kyofatogabye commended the Special Forces for their dedicated work on roads in the city.
During the press conference, Kyofatogabye took the opportunity to criticize City Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago for undermining the contributions of the engineers involved in the rehabilitation projects. He emphasized the effectiveness of the Special Forces Regiment in executing road rehabilitation and construction tasks.
Kyofatogabye highlighted that with a budget of UGX 2 billion, the Special Forces Regiment aims to carry out extensive work covering an impressive area of 8,000 square meters.
He contrasted this with the hypothetical scenario of allocating the same budget to a private contractor, which, according to him, would only cover around 1,500 square meters for sectional repairs in rehabilitation.
Kyofatogabye applauded the Special Forces Regiment for their impactful road rehabilitation work and criticized City Lord Mayor Lukwago for downplaying the achievements of the engineers involved in the projects.
Kampala’s Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago had earlier criticized SFC’s capacity to fix roads, suggesting they focus on national security.
His comments followed an inspection exercise carried out by Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations on Tuesday this week .Muhoozi toured the construction works, interacting with engineers and assessing progress.
The roads targeted in this fresh effort include Prince Charles Drive, Elizabeth Avenue, Wampewo, John Babiha, Lower and Upper Kololo, Impala, Nile Avenue, Colville and Kimathi Avenue among others.
SFC engineers began their efforts in Kololo, targeting key roads in diplomatic and residential areas. The SFC aimed to complete the work in Central Division by mid-December, with plans to address other divisions later.
The SFC’s Construction Regiment aims to fill 19,324 square meters of potholes in the central division by mid-December 2023 at a cost of Shs 2bn.
In May 2023, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, inspected road repair works in Kampala conducted by the Special Forces Command (SFC).
