Minister Katumba Pledges to Fix Kampala’s pothole problem By July

Katumba assured the nation that steps would be taken to address the problem

The minister of works and Transport Gen Katumba Wamala, has vowed to tackle the ongoing issue of potholes in the city by July.

Speaking at an Iftar dinner held by Yuasa Investments Limited at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, Gen Katumba assured the nation that steps would be taken to address the problem.

He announced plans for the construction of new roads and the rehabilitation of existing ones, aimed at alleviating the persistent issue of potholes.

“By July, the problem of potholes will be resolved,” he stated confidently. “Construction and rehabilitation of new roads in the city will begin during that month to tackle the enduring issue of potholes.”

Additionally, the minister addressed the rising number of road accidents claiming numerous lives across Uganda. Expressing deep concern over the alarming statistics, he urged all stakeholders to join forces to combat this menace. “The road accidents we’re witnessing are devastating, and each year the numbers keep rising,” lamented Katumba. “I am seeking partners to lead the fight against road accidents.

I urge all road users to act responsibly and with discipline. Road safety is a collective responsibility; it’s not just up to the police. Let’s all uphold discipline while using the roads.” Potholes have long been a frustrating problem on Kampala’s roads, causing inconvenience for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.

Last December, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) announced an ambitious initiative to eradicate potholes by mid-January 2024, but this pledge has since remained unfulfilled.
