Minister Janet Museveni Calls for Collaboration on Mental Health Awareness

Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataha Museveni, has urged various stakeholders to collaborate on raising awareness about mental health to address the concerning prevalence of mental disorders among young people.

In a message delivered by John Chrysostom Muyingo, the Minister for Higher Education, at the 20th anniversary of the Afro Arab Youth Council at Kampala International University (KIU), Mrs. Museveni emphasized that tackling mental health issues is a collective responsibility.

“I appreciate the organizers of this conference for choosing a theme that sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals with mental health issues; it is both timely and a matter of concern for all of us. Globally, millions suffer from mental health conditions every year.”

She also called on everyone to listen to young people facing challenges in their communities.

“Through compassion and empathy, we can support those affected. Parents should adopt proper parenting practices to ensure children find comfort in family unity and avoid addiction to phones and televisions, which can have detrimental effects on their mental well-being.”

Additionally, she urged all stakeholders to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health, fostering an environment where open discussions are encouraged, and individuals feel safe seeking support without fear of judgment.

Dr. Salim Alimalik, Director General of the Islamic World Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), highlighted the prioritization of mental health during the conference, recognizing its potential to detrimentally impact the next generation if not addressed effectively.

“Young people are not immune to mental health challenges; statistics show that more than one in every seven adolescents aged between ten to nineteen live with mental disorders. It is estimated that 86 million people between the ages of 15 to 19 live with mental health issues worldwide.”

Alimalik, on his first visit to Uganda, praised Ugandans for the warm welcome extended to him and his delegation during their visit.

Dr. Abbasi Agaba, Secretary-General of the African and Arab Youth Council, explained that the conference is part of a series of activities commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Afro Arab Youth Council.

He added that other activities would include visiting and donating to Butabika Hospital, cultural celebrations with the Kyabazinga of Busoga in Jinja, exploring tourist attractions in Busoga, and participating in Women’s Day celebrations in Katakwi, among others
