The Minister for Presidency Babirye Milly Babaranda passionately spoke about the upcoming 38th NRM NRA Victory Day anniversary celebrations scheduled for Friday, January 26, 2024. This was during a press briefing at the Uganda Media Centre this morning.

The minister commenced by reflecting on the historical significance of the day, emphasizing its commemoration of the sacrifices made by Ugandan men and women during the five-year struggle that led to the overthrow of the immediate post-independence dictatorship in 1987.

“The 38th NRM NRA Victory Day is a day when we honor our fellow countrymen and women, whether living or deceased, who played pivotal roles in laying the foundation for the liberation of Uganda,” stated Minister Babaranda.

She reminded the public that January 26th was declared a public holiday in 1987, marking the victory achieved through the liberation struggle. This day serves as an opportunity for citizens to assess their contributions to the ideals that ignited a patriotic flame in the hearts of the youth at the time.

According to the minister, the theme for this year’s celebration is “Building a Country We All Cherish,” aligning with the broader NRM manifesto for 2021-2026, emphasizing President Museveni’s commitment to securing the future of all Ugandans over the next five years.

Minister Babaranda announced that President Museveni is expected to officiate at the international celebrations, with preparations for the national event in Jinja City at Saint John SS Watchtower playgrounds on January 26th in their final stages.

District celebrations will be held throughout the country, with district leaders selecting venues for commemorating the significant day. The minister explained that some district leaders, especially those near Jinja City, would attend the national celebrations, making district celebrations in those areas scheduled for later dates.

Addressing security concerns, the minister assured Ugandans that necessary measures had been put in place, with the Uganda Police Force overseeing overall security, supported by specialized units such as UPDF, ESO, and the Special Forces Command.

Babaranda extended invitations to dignitaries for the celebrations, with strict adherence to COVID-19 standard operating procedures. She also outlined the program for the day, urging the general public to be seated by 9:00 am.

The minister highlighted the achievements of the Ugandan government in various sectors since 1986, including economic growth, infrastructure development, and increased life expectancy. She called on the media to communicate these successes and challenged them to engage with the government in promoting national transformation.
