Kylian Mbappé is expected to miss France’s upcoming Euro 2024 match against the Netherlands on Friday after sustaining a broken nose during their opening game against Austria, sources have told ESPN.
The French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed that Mbappé will not require surgery, which would have sidelined him for the entire tournament. Instead, he will wear a custom-made mask when he returns to play.
Despite Mbappé’s optimism about playing, sources indicate he is a major doubt for Friday’s game. France’s coaching staff is cautious about rushing his return, preferring to preserve him for the rest of the tournament. It is anticipated that Mbappé might instead make his comeback against Poland on June 25, if necessary.
France started their Euro 2024 campaign on a high note with a 1-0 victory over Austria in Group D on Monday. Mbappé, who was hospitalized in Düsseldorf post-match, humorously solicited mask design ideas on social media: “Any ideas for a mask?”
At a news conference on Tuesday, FFF President Phillipe Diallo shared a hopeful outlook on Mbappé’s recovery.
“He had this injury to his nose, but the news is rather reassuring. There won’t be an operation in the short term,” Diallo stated. “Concerning his return, it is premature to give a timetable. We’re waiting for the latest updates from the doctor this morning.”
Kevin Danso, the Austrian defender involved in the collision, extended his sympathies to Mbappé.
“I wish him a good recovery and I hope he can quickly get back on the pitch,” Danso posted on social media. “To French supporters: I am sorry that Kylian Mbappe was injured from our duel.”
France will proceed cautiously with Mbappé’s recovery, ensuring the star forward is fit for the crucial stages of the tournament as they aim to add another major title to their 2018 World Cup victory.
