Police in Kakumiro, have arrested a 42-year-old man named Alex Byamugisha on suspicion of strangling his one-day-old baby to death and secretly burying the child.
Byamugisha lives in Katugo LCI, Irindimura parish, Nalweyo sub-county in Kakumiro district.
Byamugisha’s wife, Allen Kemigisa, gave birth on Monday night. However, on Tuesday night, Byamugisha allegedly killed the baby and buried the child without anyone knowing.
Yoram Kwikiriza, the chairperson of Katugo Village LC I, explained that Byamugisha claimed the baby was born weak and with health problems, and the child died after only one day. However, his explanations about the baby’s whereabouts were inconsistent, raising suspicion among residents. As a result, he was arrested and taken to Kakumiro central police station. During police questioning, he revealed where he had secretly buried the child.
Morris Niyonzima, the Kakumiro District Police Commander, confirmed the arrest and said that investigations are ongoing. The police are considering exhuming the baby’s body to determine the exact circumstances of the child’s death. Once the investigations are complete, the suspect will likely face murder charges in court.
