Police in Aswa Region have arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly killing his 48-year-old mother for denying him a plate of food.

The suspect identified as Dickson Okane, killed his mother, Betty Adoch at their home in Bar Cell, Pece Laroo division, Gulu City.

The appalling incident transpired on a fateful Sunday night at around 11 pm when a drunken Okane ,returned home late from a drinking spree and requested food from his mother. However, when his mother did not immediately fulfill his request, he grew impatient.

Aswa West Region Police Spokesperson, David Ongom Mudong, says in a fit of rage, Okane seized a plate and forcibly attempted to serve himself. When his mother intervened to stop him, an altercation ensued. At this point, Okane, consumed by anger, retrieved an axe and brutally struck his mother’s head three times, rendering her unconscious.

Adoch was rushed to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries, marking a tragic end to this disturbing incident.

Mudong says police  recovered the murder weapon, the axe, which is being held as evidence in the case.He further states that Okane is currently detained at Gulu City East Division Police Station, where a case of murder, under CRB 361/2023, has been registered and is awaiting further investigation.

He has condemned the senseless act saying drugs and alcohol abuse were contributing to an alarming increase in homicide cases within the sub-region.
