Man Flees After Chopping Wife With Panga in Domestic Brawl

Police in Kagadi are intensifying efforts to locate Eldard Byaruhanga, a resident of Nsugasugi village in Kanyangoma parish of Kagadi sub-county, following accusations of him severing his wife’s hands.

The victim, identified as 22-year-old Rose Basemera, also from Nsugasugi village, was reportedly attacked while seeking refuge at her aunt’s residence amid a domestic dispute with Byaruhanga.

According to reports, Basemera sought shelter at her aunt’s house following a disagreement with Byaruhanga, the details of which remain undisclosed, however some neighbors who spoke on condition of anonymity claim Basemera had accused his wife of infidelity . Byaruhanga purportedly traced her to her temporary abode and carried out the brutal assault before fleeing the scene.

Joselyne Nyamate, Basemera’s aunt, recounted the horrifying incident, stating that they were alerted by her cries for help and discovered her grievously injured, with both hands mutilated.

Julius Hakiza, spokesperson for the Albertine Region Police, confirmed that a manhunt is underway to locate Byaruhanga, who remains at large.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with a section of locals threatening to lynch the suspect for trailing and attempting to murder his wife in a domestic brawl.

Police have urged anyone with information regarding Byaruhanga’s whereabouts to come forward, as efforts to bring him to justice continue.
