Makerere University Lecturer Found Dead in Lake Victoria, Police Investigate
Jinja Road Police are currently investigating the death of Mugaga Julius, a 32-year-old lecturer at Makerere University, whose body was discovered floating in Lake Victoria.
Mugaga, a resident of Kasubi Mengo in Lubaga division, Kampala, was reported missing on May 15, 2024.
The incident came to light on May 16, 2024, at 12:33 PM, when police received a report from fishermen who had spotted a body floating near the shores of Senene Island. Eyewitnesses described the body as floating face-up. This information was initially shared on a WhatsApp group from Luzira.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson says officers visited the and gathered statements from relevant witnesses. He further explains that body, in a decomposing state dressed in a dark and light blue T-shirt and assorted color shorts, was retrieved from the island by a team of casual experts and transported to Port Bell for easier retrieval. Subsequently, it was conveyed to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
He adds that key findings at the scene included an Aquos mobile phone, a bank deposit slip from Equity Bank dated May 13, 2024, bearing the name Mugaga Julius, and a pair of blue rubber sandals found near the body at the shore.
According to Onyang, the deceased was identified through missed calls on his phone, and his brother, Ssebufu Alex, confirmed his identity. A case of his disappearance had been reported at Kawala Police Station under reference SD 14/15/05/2024.
