Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago Shares Health Journey Following Surgery in India

In a heartfelt message to the public, Lord Mayor for Kampala Erias Lukwago has disclosed details about his health condition after undergoing surgery in New Delhi, India. Lukwago,  underwent a complex procedure aimed at addressing a herniated disc in his spine.

Lukwago revealed images of his post-surgery appearance, showcasing his emaciated figure and the surgical incision on his neck, a reminder of the intricate procedure performed by skilled neurosurgeons in India. The surgery involved replacing the problematic disc with an artificial one, a procedure that necessitated accessing his spine through his neck.

Reflecting on his recovery process, Lukwago expressed gratitude for waking up without sedatives and undergoing a natural healing process. He credited a team of dedicated neurosurgeons and health experts at Fortis Memorial Gurugram, India, for providing him with a “new lease of life.”

Acknowledging the contributions of medical professionals in Uganda, Lukwago extended his thanks to neurosurgeons, orthopedists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, and others who assisted him before his journey to India. He highlighted various medical facilities in Uganda and Nairobi, Kenya, where he received treatment and care during his health journey.

Throughout his recovery, Lukwago emphasized the overwhelming support he received from family members, caregivers in both India and Uganda, fellow political leaders, staff at the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), and a myriad of other individuals and organizations. He expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of love and encouragement from across Uganda and beyond.

Looking ahead, Lukwago shared his aspiration to return to Kampala by May 11, 2024, pending medical clearance from Dr. Sandeep Vaishya, the lead neurosurgeon at Fortis Memorial. He humorously remarked that he would emerge from this experience as an “uncertified paramedic and counselor in neurology and orthopedics.”
