LOP Ssenyonyi Calls for Accountability in Controversial Parliamentary Award Saga
Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, has urged his predecessor, Mathias Mpuuga, not to evade accountability for the controversial Shs 500 million he received as a service award from Parliament by hiding behind his ties with Mengo.
Addressing journalists in Kalungu over the weekend, Ssenyonyi stated, “When we obtain evidence, we will not remain silent. You have witnessed how we handled the Honorable Mathias Mpuuga matter. We presented evidence, and he acknowledged his wrongdoing. Let us not be misled into thinking this is about Kabaka. The Kabaka has never authorized anyone to misappropriate taxpayers’ money. Let us not bring embarrassment upon the Kabaka. Instead, let us address the questions posed by the people of Uganda.”
Ssenyonyi visited Kalungu to participate in the silver jubilee celebrations for Christians at St. Jude Thaddeus in Lukaya.
This marks the first instance Ssenyonyi has commented on the Mpuuga issue, and its impact on their relationship remains to be seen.
Last week, the National Unity Platform (NUP) issued Mpuuga a seven-day ultimatum to justify why the party should not recall him as parliamentary commissioner. Mpuuga has maintained that he violated no law in accepting the service award.
