The NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong has called on local leaders to spearhead economic transformation of their areas by actively explaining to their communities and urging them to engage in income-generating activities.
During a thanksgiving ceremony organised by the Lamwo District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon Achora Nancy Odonga yesterday in Padibe Town Council, Lamwo district, Todwong emphasized that leaders must move beyond rhetoric and provide practical guidance to uplift their people.
“We need to learn and start engaging in business and engage in income generation. Leaders need to start teaching people and encouraging them to engage in businesses.” Todwong said.
He further stressed that while the government has and continues to put in place infrastructure such as roads and electricity, it was upon the people to leverage the development to facilitate their personal economic growth.
“You love the (NRM) party and the party loves you, but people don’t eat the party. The party will construct a road for you but you should know how to use that road for your good. This main road that goes to the Sudan border is a business opportunity for you.” He stressed.
On party membership, Todwong explained that the NRM party stood for strength and inclusivity and called on the party members to welcome and embrace new members who have joined the party.
“In the NRM, we don’t segregate amongst the people. I want to urge the old members to welcome these new members and not segregate them. The upcoming elections shouldn’t divide you” the Secretary General explained.
On her part, the host Hon Nancy Acora Odonga, expressed her profound gratitude to the people of Lamwo for entrusting her with the role of representing them in parliament.
“God should bless you the people of Lamwo, I thank you for entrusting me with this leadership mantle. There is no price I can attach to this trust. I can’t repay you.” Looking ahead, she passionately appealed for harmony in the political landscape: “Let’s be peaceful during the coming campaigns. It’s God that chooses the leaders, we only ‘moko amoka’ (play our part).”
Adding her voice, Hon. Margaret Lamwaka Odwa (Chua East Constituency MP), extended her gratitude to the Secretary-General for facilitating the Memorandum of Understanding that enables their collaboration with the NRM.
Hon. Lamwaka also took the opportunity to critique opposition tactics, accusing them of “inciting violence and hatred amongst the people by speaking about issues that create division. She thanked the electorate for their support and urged them to “vote for NRM and President Museveni in the general elections.”
