The 35th anniversary of the NRM/A Liberation Day was marked with scientific celebrations at State House, Entebbe yesterday (Wednesday, January 26, 2021).

During the celebration, where only a handful of dignitaries were invited,  President Yoweri Museveni said he is ready to reconcile with the opposition following their defeat in the January 14 elections.

Earlier, the Kampala Archdiocese Vicar General, Msgr Charles Kasibante, had asked the government to allow NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi “to have his freedom of movement and expression.”

This Kasibante said would act as a sign of reconciliation.

In response, Museveni said Kasibante was preaching to the choir.

“About reconciliation, that is our way of doing things,” Museveni said.

He added that the only things they were not ready to tolerate included violence, intimidation and cheating.

He cited several examples where the government is working well with relatives of former presidents and other key opposition leaders.

Police and other security personnel have since withdrawn from Kyagulanyi’s residence.

The scientific celebrations were marked under the theme, “Celebrating the 35th National Resistance Movement/Army (NRM/A) victory day, a call to play our duty in securing our nation’s future”.

Museveni congratulated Ugandans upon the victory.

“That victory came after a long struggle which started in 1965. By 1965, we had already seen the dangers,” Museveni said.
