A Local Defense Unit (LDU) officer, private Robert Miyaga who shot dead two people in Masaka municipality has also been gunned down by the army personnel.
Miyaga opened fire and shot Edward Musaasizi, the chairperson of Lutovu village in Malongo sub-county in Lwengo district and Jacqueline Asasira along Kampala road next to Byansi pharmacy in Masaka today Friday. The murder was captured on CCTV cameras in the area.
Major Flavia Terimulungi, the spokesperson Masaka UPDF armoured brigade, says preliminary reports show that Miyaga killed the two over infidelity after obtaining reports that the village chairperson was involved in a love affair with his wife, Asasira. After shooting the duo, Miyaga took off and reportedly locked himself in LG Guesthouse and Pub where he was pursued and shot dead after allegedly refusing to surrender.
Shortly after the shooting, Brig Richard Karemire, the UPDF spokesman said: “We condemn the killing by a reservist today in Masaka of two civilians . The killer has been shot dead in a fire fight with a UPDF squad while resisting arrest .We convey deepest condolences to bereaved families. Investigations into the incident have commenced.”
According to eyewitnesses, Miyaga trailed the duo up to Byansi pharmacy where they had gone to buy drugs. He opened fire at his victims as they were boarding a motorcycle, killing Musasizi on the spot. Asasira who was said to be pregnant, died shortly after being rushed to Masaka regional referral hospital.Alex Kafuuma, a boda boda cyclist next to Byansi stage narrates that Miyaga shot Musaasizi in the head twice before turning his gun on Asasira.Noeline Namubiru, another eye witness says that Miyaga opened fire after killing Musaasizi to scare people who tried to pursue him.
