Museveni Says ‘Conserve and Multiply’ Approach will Create Lasting Wealth for Africa
President Yoweri Museveni has said Africa can only create long-lasting wealth if its people conserve and multiply wealth.
The President, who was speaking during the International Labor Day National Celebrations this afternoon at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, cited an example of children who destroy their parents’ wealth after their death.
“We [Africans] have had backward practices, where when the person dies the children start dividing what is left of the property. In Europe, people like Henry Ford died long ago but the wealth he left is bigger now. Africans are like ants they eat even the little the deceased left behind,” the president said.
“What we need is to conserve what we have, and multiply it. In Agriculture alone, with whatever land we are left with, we can create over 50 million jobs. Now with the Parish Development Model, we can kickstart this. We need a workforce of very many workers.”
According to Museveni, one of the biggest challenges Africa has is having elites who can’t help get people out of poverty.
“We have had differences with the elite, the people who should be leading others. They do not know how to get people out of poverty. They think it is in order for a few people to be rich while others remain backward. If everyone is sensitized, they can wake up and know what to do,” he said.
“We have started the way, we have taught you the four sectors which we know can produce money; Commercial Agriculture with Ekibalo, ICT, Services and Industry. If we can take the message and act on it, we shall create wealth. Of Course, we must abandon our backward practices.”
