Kiira Motors Corporation to Commission New Facility
A gift to the nation, aligning with Uganda's Independence celebrations of 2024
In a momentous turn of events for Uganda’s automotive industry, Kiira Motor Corporation (KMC) is gearing up for the launch of its new manufacturing facility on October 8, 2024.
The event is being heralded as a gift to the nation, aligning with Uganda’s Independence celebrations. According to the Minister for Science, Technology, and Innovation, Monica Musenero, this launch marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s industrial development and technological innovation.
The launch is set to be a grand affair, with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni expected to grace the occasion as the guest of honor. In his continuous support of local industries, President Museveni recognizes the strategic importance of automobile manufacturing, not only for job creation but also for fostering technological advancement in Uganda.
As of the KMC trace back to 2007, when a visionary collaboration was initiated by a team of students and staff from Makerere University, led by Prof. Sandy Stevens Tickodri-Togboa and Mr. Paul Isaac Musasizi.
This pioneering effort was born from a desire to place Uganda on the global automotive map. Over the years, KMC has evolved into a formidable player in the automotive sector, successfully manufacturing 27 buses to date.
Some of these vehicles are already operational on Uganda’s roads, while others have found their way into vibrant local markets.
The government has emphasized the importance of self-reliance and innovation within the Ugandan economy, and this facility is a testament to those principles.
“This new facility will not only empower our youth and create jobs but will also position Uganda as a competitive player in the regional automotive market, It is a visionary step towards achieving our goal of economic independence”, Musenero stated
As the countdown to the due day begins , excitement is palpable among stakeholders and the local community. The wheels are set in motion as Uganda looks towards a future where its own automotive industry will drive the nation forward inspiring pride, and innovation for generations.
