KCCA To Block Boda Boda Riders Who Shunned Census Exercise
He says those who dismiss the cashless process are hindering the authority from properly planning for the City and may not be able to operate.
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has warned that all boda boda operators who will not be registered by Friday September 16th, 2022 in the ongoing census exercise risk being chased from the City.
Simon Kasyate, the KCCA Spokesperson says the census that ends this week was extended another two weeks from September 01, to allow all unregistered operators participate.
He says those who dismiss the cashless process are hindering the authority from properly planning for the City and may not be able to operate.
Kasyate however says over 20,000 boda bodas have already registered out of an estimated 50,000 riders in the City. He wants all boda boda operators to embrace the exercise.
“If a boda boda operator skips registration by Friday this week, it will be difficult for them to operate in Kampala. As KCCA, We first want to finalize with the census and proceed to plan. But we cannot plan for people we don’t know, We have registered over 20000 boda bodas so far and are aware that the number is bigger than that,” he says
The census was extended after many people flocked to their registration centers at the last minute to register prompting KCCA .
Deputy Executive Director Eng. David Luyimbazi said that since many of their registration centers were located at schools that were re-opening, the registration centers would be shifted to the respective five divisions of Kampala.
The”Boda Boda census”, was directive by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to KCCA to streamline operations of the Boda Boda Industry. Riders and owners were required to visit twelve designated venues to register their motorcycles and riders.
KCCA plans to gazette stages and allocate them to riders and issue uniforms and stickers with a scanable QR Code with details of the riders.
Another ongoing exercise that ensures training for riders was announced by the State Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs Kabuye Kyofatogabye .
Under this one, Deputy Resident City Commissioners-DRCCs conduct the registration exercise while the Uganda Driving Licensing Agency-UDSA conducts training for riders. Several riders registered with their DRCCs and trained with UDSA at Shillings 50,000.
