Kawempe North By-Election Set for March 13, 2025

The Electoral Commission (EC)  has officially announced March 13, 2025, as the polling date for the highly anticipated Kawempe North parliamentary by-election.

The seat fell vacant following the recent passing of MP Muhammad Ssegirinya.

The EC has laid out a detailed schedule to ensure a smooth electoral process: Candidate Nominations: February 26 to 27, 2025, Inspection of Candidate Papers: February 27 to March 5, 2025, Campaign Period: February 28 to March 11, 2025.

The Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama stated that Henry Makabai has been appointed as the Returning Officer for this by-election, with Rehema Nassuna serving as the Assistant Returning Officer.

Campaigning will officially commence on February 28, giving candidates two weeks to reach out to the electorate. Over ten aspirants have already expressed interest in contesting for the Kawempe North seat, reflecting the high stakes of this by-election.

Notably, the Democratic Party (DP) has confirmed its intention to field a candidate, signaling intensified competition. Other political parties and independent candidates are also expected to join the race.

The EC has reiterated its commitment to delivering a free, fair, and peaceful by-election. It has encouraged all stakeholders, including candidates, voters, and election observers, to adhere to the electoral guidelines. The Commission is also accepting applications for election observers and invites proposals aimed at enhancing transparency during the polls.

The EC has urged political parties, civil society organizations, and the public to cooperate in promoting peace and ensuring a credible electoral process.
