The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has conveyed heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church following the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, who died on April 21, 2025.
In a solemn message delivered to the Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda at the Nunciature in Mbuya, Mayiga described the Pope’s death as a moment of deep sorrow, not only for Catholics but for all people who cherished humanity, humility, and unity.
“Your Excellency, it is with deep sorrow that we receive the sad news of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis,” Mayiga stated, addressing the Vatican’s diplomatic representative. “We convey our heartfelt condolences to Your Excellency and the entire Catholic faithful in Uganda and across the world.”
The Katikkiro praised the strong historical relationship between the Catholic Church and the Kingdom of Buganda, rooted in mutual respect, cultural appreciation, and a shared mission to uplift communities through faith, education, healthcare, and social services.
He reflected on Pope Francis’ 2015 visit to Uganda, recalling a personal audience held on November 28 that year. “We had the opportunity to talk about some of his core principles,” Mayiga said, underscoring the late pontiff’s dedication to service and spiritual leadership.
Mayiga described Pope Francis as “a healer of moral and spiritual strength,” lauding his twelve-year papacy as one marked by sacrifice, compassion, and a tireless pursuit of unity.
“As we join you in mourning, we also give thanks for the enduring legacy left behind,” he said. “May the soul of the departed Holy Father rest in eternal peace.”
The message concluded with prayers for comfort to the global Catholic community and a reaffirmation of Buganda Kingdom’s solidarity with the Church during this period of mourning.
