The long-awaited transformation of Kampala’s road network is taking shape as the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) continues the implementation of the Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP).
The Deputy Executive Director, Benon Kigenyi, led an inspection tour of several key roads under the project, assessing progress and ensuring quality standards are met.
Among the roads inspected was Wamala Road in Rubaga Division, which has seen a significant upgrade. Once dusty and riddled with potholes, Wamala Road now boasts a smooth asphalt surface, proper drainage systems, and streetlights along its walkways, enhancing safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
The inspection also covered roads under Lot III of the KCRRP, including Sir Apollo Kaggwa Road, 5th Street, 6th Street, 7th Street, 8th Street, Suuna I Road, Suuna II Road, and Muzito Road. These roads, located in different parts of the city, are being rehabilitated to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and support economic activities within Kampala.
Speaking during the tour, Kigenyi emphasized KCCA’s commitment to delivering world-class urban infrastructure.
“These roads are part of our broader effort to modernize Kampala’s transport network. Through KCRRP, we aim to provide durable and safe roads that facilitate business and improve the everyday experiences of city dwellers,” Kigenyi said.
The Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP) is a flagship initiative aimed at upgrading and reconstructing over 70 kilometers of city roads. Funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Government of Uganda, the project focuses on improving road infrastructure, installing streetlights, and upgrading drainage systems to mitigate flooding.
Residents and business owners in the inspected areas expressed optimism about the improvements. “Before, we struggled with dust and potholes, but now we have a proper road that benefits everyone, from traders to commuters,” said James Muwanga, a resident of Rubaga.
As KCCA pushes forward with the rehabilitation efforts, the authority urges road users to exercise patience and cooperate with ongoing works to ensure the successful completion of the project.
The KCRRP remains a crucial step in Kampala’s journey towards a more modern and efficient urban transport system.
