Man Arrested For Killing Taxi Passenger in Violent Fight
Police in Kampala Metropolitan have charged a suspect in connection with a road rage-related murder that occurred on the 15th of July 2023 in Kironde Zone, Kabowa, Lubaga Division.
The suspect, identified as Menya Moses, was apprehended in connection with the tragic incident that claimed the life of Ssentongo Reagan, alias Abtex.
Preliminary findings indicate that Ssentongo, who was traveling with fellow mourners in a taxi for a burial, collided with a bodaboda rider named Wasswa, who was transporting a female passenger.
Tensions escalated quickly as an argument erupted between Wasswa, the bodaboda rider, and the taxi driver, with the taxi’s occupants joining in. The situation took a deadly turn when Reagan Ssentongo, a passenger in the taxi, aggressively confronted Wasswa, leading to a physical altercation. Tragically, Wasswa hit his head on the road during the altercation, causing him to collapse.
Fred Enanga the Uganda Police Spokesperson says upon witnessing the incident, a boda boda passenger named Teopista raised an alarm, claiming that Wasswa had succumbed to his injuries.
This he says angered locals at Kisenyi metal yard who swiftly pursued Ssentongo as he attempted to flee the scene.
Enanga says police officers arrived at the scene and attempted to rescue Ssentongo, however, eventually, the crowd overpowered Police Constable Baluku, who had arrested him, and violently battered him.
The injured suspect, Ssentongo was subsequently handed over to the police at Ndeeba and rushed to Mulago Hospital for medical treatment. He died on the 23rd of July 2023 while undergoing treatment at Kiruddu Hospital.
Enanga says the deceased’s relatives staged a protest in Kisenyi, leaving his lifeless body at the railway line but the police intervened and took custody of the body, transporting it to Mulago City Mortuary for post mortem examination.
He adds that Menya was charged with murder as he appeared before the court on the 28th of July 2023.
