Joint security forces operating in the Mt. Moroto Region have recovered an illegal Sub-Machine Gun (SMG) rifle in Nabilatuk District following a successful intelligence-led operation. The firearm, an SMG with registration number 28758, was recovered from a Karimojong warrior in Napao Village, Kalokwameri Parish, Kosike Subcounty. No rounds of ammunition were found with the weapon.
According to security officials, the breakthrough followed one month of sustained intelligence gathering, which traced the suspects’ activities and livestock movements. The operation also led to the impoundment of 65 heads of cattle from Namorulem Village, Nakayot Parish, Kosike Subcounty, where the suspects’ kraal is located.
Authorities report that the suspects later attempted to reclaim their cattle by offering to hand over the illegal firearm. The weapon was formally received and exhibited at the District Internal Security Officer (DISO)’s office. Security leaders praised the community for its growing cooperation, noting that such partnerships are critical in reducing armed criminality and restoring stability across the Karamoja sub-region.
“We commend the residents for their continued vigilance and support. We encourage the public to keep sharing information that helps security forces maintain peace and protect lives,” said IP Longole Mike, Public Relations Officer for Mt. Moroto/ASTU.
The joint forces reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing disarmament efforts and the protection of communities affected by cattle rustling and illicit firearms.
