Kampala police have identified the weapon used in the attempted assassination of Pastor Aloysius Bujingo and the murder of his bodyguard, Corporal Richard Muhumuza.

The assailants targeted the duo on January 2, 2024, at Bawalakata Junction, Namungoona, Lubaga Division, riding on a motorcycle and firing multiple shots at Pastor Bugingo’s car.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy metropolitan spokesperson, the weapon used in the attack has been confirmed as a pistol. However, the police have not disclosed the specific details regarding the number of bullets fired or retrieved from the crime scene and the body of the deceased.

“We only know the type of gun used to be a pistol, and that is all we can say now. About how many bullets were fired or how many were picked from the body, that will be mentioned in a comprehensive report,” stated Owoyesigyire. The forensics directorate is actively analyzing evidence from the crime scene, focusing on Bujingo’s car, currently stationed at the forensics headquarters in Naguru.” says Owoyesigyire

Sources suggest that police pathologists found over 10 bullet wounds in Richard Muhumuza’s body. Additionally, five ballistic and forensic experts have been assigned to examine Bujingo’s vehicle to determine the shooting angles.

The ongoing investigation aims to establish the angles of penetration for both the vehicle and the body, utilizing bullet cartridges from the crime scene and the car, as well as bullets recovered from Muhumuza’s body. While it has been confirmed that Bujingo’s vehicle was not extensively riddled with bullets, the comprehensive report is expected to provide more insights into the incident.

This attempted assassination adds to a series of gun violence incidents in Uganda, with past victims including Isma Olaxes, Gen Edward Katumba Wamala (survivor of an assassination that claimed his daughter’s life), AIGP Alex Kaweesi, Abiriga Muhammed, and Gen Muhammed Kiggundu, among others.

The police are diligently working on unraveling the circumstances surrounding this latest incident and providing a detailed report in due course.
