Interview: Lt Gen Muhanga Speaks out on New Role as CLF, Promotion
The newly promoted Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga has at the same time been appointed as Commander Land Forces of UPDF. He has had an interaction with media fraternity in Fortportal city and these are the excerpts:
Qn. General, this morning we have seen you and your colleagues taking marathon in the city suburbs. What does it mean in the army?
Ans. First of all this is Maj Gen Bombelle Ehola Camille, my counterpart in DRC. We have been in operation conducting meetings and strategies on how to give final blow to ADF remnants. When we came back to Fortportal, we had a joint road run with FARDC commanders and men. Physical exercises in the army brings soldiers together, it encourages team work and builds cohesion.
Qn. How far is operation Shujaa and what are your strategic plans?
Ans. Overall, operation Shujaa has been a success. We have virtually defeated ADF terrorists. The national strategic objective has been achieved. ADF has been dislodged in their decade long camps. We have disrupted their communication network, logistical network and recruitment network. In a nutshell, we have achieved a lot in phase three.
Qn. When is operation Shujaa ending?
Ans. When all the National Strategic objectives have been achieved then operations can end.
Qn. How do you feel about your being appointed as Commander Land Forces?
Ans. First of all am very grateful to the Commander In Chief and the army leadership for having put trust in me as CLF. This office means an added responsibility;there is more work to do. There is a need to up my act and work harder to deliver the desired goals of the appointing authority and serve the mighty UPDF.
Qn. Don’t you think the rank you have been given is long overdue considering the jobs you have offered the country?
Ans. It is not overdue. I think it is timely. Everything has got its own time; even that is what the Bible says. So this is the time the Leadership has seen that my services are required for the position at hand.
Qn. Afande you are the overall commander operation Shujaa and now Commander Land Forces, how are you going to balance the two positions?
Ans. At a given point in time the leadership will appoint another commander for operation Shujaa. However, a CLF commands all these operations. You have to overlook operations in Somalia, DRC, Equatorial Guinea and operations within the country; for instance the Karamoja issue. In other words I will still be in charge of all these operations.
Qn. Which tasks do you envisage in this new office as Commander Land Forces?
Ans. There is a lot to do. This is a big office. A lot of hard work and a lot of commitment required. Though the office is new to me, there are commanders who have been there. General Muhozi Kainerugaba has been in that office and he has done tremendous job. Overall am going to replace a person who has done a lot. His shoe is too big for me to occupy. So I will always be seeking advice from him given the fact that he is still my senior
