The National Resistance Movement (NRM) electoral commission chairperson, Dr Tanga Odoi, has declared Mwesigwa Rukutana the winner of Rushenyi County primary elections.

Rukutana garnered 25,310 votes ahead of his biggest challenger, Naome Kabasharira, who polled 25,290 votes. Rukutana took the day with a difference of just 20 votes.

Rukutana, the state minister for gender, was briefly arrested shortly after the primaries on charges ranging from attempted murder to threatening violence.

Rushenyi is located in Ntungamo district.
