Minister of State for Internal Affairs, Gen David Muhoozi has less than 30 days to respond to concerns raised by the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, on alleged missing persons and human rights violations.
Then directive was issued by the Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa on Thursday last week after Mpuuga criticized the Minister’s previous statement, saying it didn’t address human rights abuses and restrictions on civic freedoms in the country.
Mpuuga demanded accountability for the alleged murder of 22 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) during a campaign in 2021 and also asked for information about 18 people who have been missing for four years. He mentioned that many Ugandans had been arrested without trial, and some were detained for a year before being released.
The Minister argued that he couldn’t respond because some of the issues were still in legal proceedings. He assured that the government values civic space and believes in the rule of law and the constitution.
The Deputy Speaker instructed Mpuuga to provide more information to the Minister, and they would require a detailed response from the Minister within the given timeframe.
