Gov’t Commits to Construction of Akii Bua Stadium Despite AFCON Exclusion

Speaker Anita Among reassured MPs from Lango sub-region that the government’s commitment to construct Akii Bua stadium in Lira district remains intact, allaying concerns stemming from its exclusion as a venue for the 36th African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.

Chairing a plenary sitting, Among emphasized the historical significance of Akii Bua stadium in honoring the late athlete John Akii Bua.

Addressing worries about the stadium’s omission from the AFCON host list, Among explained that specific requirements, such as a five-star hotel and an airfield, must be met for a stadium to qualify. She urged calm, noting that the event is still several years away.

In response to concerns raised by MPs, Minister Samuel Acuti highlighted the abrupt change that caused anxiety among 29 MPs from the region.

However, Minister Chris Baryomunsi assured that plans are underway to construct stadiums in each region, including those traditionally associated with independence districts. Baryomunsi revealed that a recent Cabinet meeting had decided on building stadia across the country to promote talent development and sports facilities nationwide.
