Government Launches National Building Control Awards 2024

The government, through the Ministry of Works and Transport, has launched the National Building Control Awards (NBCA) 2024. These awards aim to recognize individuals and organizations that have demonstrated excellence in building control and compliance with regulatory frameworks.

Eng. Betty Nakamya, Vice Chairperson of the Board, stated that the public can now vote, and the process will take two months.

The awards, themed “Building for Sustainability,” will honor outstanding performances in seven categories: Building Committee, Building Control Officer, Building Contractors, Building Materials Manufacturers, Class Building, ABC Award, and Building for Sustainability.

The National Building Review Board (NBRB) has called on all stakeholders in the built environment to nominate potential winners and vote for their preferred nominees. These awards are designed to promote and encourage adherence to building control regulations, sustainability, and accessibility in the built environment.

“We are thrilled to launch these awards, which will recognize and reward those who have demonstrated commitment to building control and sustainability,” said Eng. Joseph Acaya, an official from the board. “We encourage all stakeholders to participate and make their voices heard.”

Several officials attended the launch in Nakasero, Kampala. Eng. Anthony Rucukye emphasized the importance of sustainable building practices, saying, “It’s crucial that the buildings we put up today serve us and future generations. We are not getting new sand from where we are mining, nor new rocks from where we are breaking them.” When asked if private homes can compete, he said, “My house can compete for the awards when it meets the criteria, having been assessed by a professional, must have a building permit, and must be verified by the team.”

Eng. Rucukye’s contribution highlighted the need for responsible resource management and sustainable building practices, aligning with the awards’ theme of “Building for Sustainability.”

The awards ceremony will take place on Friday, 6th December 2024. Voting is open from today, 17th July, until 17th September.
