Government Declares National Day of Mourning for Boat Accident Victims

Government has declared Friday a national day of mourning for the victims of the boat accident on Lake Victoria where 33 people perished.

This means that flags at government buildings and other installations will fly at half-mast. The government message regarding the day was communicated by 1st deputy prime minister Gen Moses Ali on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 33 have been confirmed dead after marine units of the security forces pulled their bodies out of the waters. Twenty-seven (27) were rescued from the water, according to deputy Police Spokesman Patrick Onyango.

He told this reporter that there hasn’t been people looking for their missing relatives, adding that there could be no more bodies in the lake although the search operation hasn’t been called off yet.

There have been reports that over 120 were sailing on the boat that capsized, meaning that some 60 people could be trapped in the waters.

When asked about this, Onyango responded: “We cannot talk about the missing persons since they didn’t register”.
